Enter your passport expiry date, destination, and planned travel dates. Where a verified rule exists in the dataset, the checker can help you see whether your passport appears to satisfy the stated validity period.
There is no universal six month rule
“Your passport must have six months left” is useful advice for some trips but incorrect as a universal rule. Different destinations apply different standards, and exceptions may depend on nationality or residence.
For covered Schengen short stays, the Schengen Borders Code generally requires a travel document to remain valid at least three months after the intended departure from the Member States and to have been issued within the previous 10 years, subject to the scope of the rule and limited exceptions.
The UAE government's visa information page states that passports must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry for the entry situations described there. Other destinations use different rules.
How to use the checker
- Enter the passport expiry date exactly as printed.
- Enter the intended arrival and departure dates.
- Select the destination.
- Review the verified rule and calculation.
- Check whether an “issued within” rule also applies.
- Verify the official source before travel.
What the result means
Appears to meet the stored validity rule
The dates entered satisfy the locally stored rule as last verified. Recheck the official source before departure.
May not meet the rule
Your passport expiry date falls short of the stored requirement. Consider renewing before travel and verify the rule with the destination authority.
Official verification required
The site does not have a sufficiently reliable, current, or specific passport validity rule for the selected trip.
What else should you check?
Passport validity is not the same as visa validity. Also check whether the passport is damaged, whether blank pages are required, whether the passport type is accepted, and whether the name and personal details match your ticket and visa application.
How passport validity is calculated
The important reference date is set by the destination's rule. Some authorities require a passport to remain valid for a stated period after arrival; others measure from the intended departure date. A few require validity only for the planned stay, while an airline, cruise operator, or transit authority may apply another rule to its part of the journey. Do not add six months to the flight date unless the official wording actually uses that calculation.
Enter the full itinerary into the passport expiration checker, including the expected date you leave the destination. Then read the result as a date comparison, not an immigration decision. A trip can appear to meet the expiry calculation and still fail another travel document condition. Conversely, a generic travel recommendation to renew early is not proof that the law requires six months for every traveler.
The Schengen rule shows why wording matters. For non-EU nationals covered by the general short-stay entry conditions, official EU passport guidance ↗ states that the passport should remain valid for at least three months after the intended departure and must have been issued within the previous ten years. Singapore's Immigration and Checkpoints Authority ↗ states a minimum passport validity of six months for travelers entering Singapore, except Singapore passport holders. These are different rules with different reference points; neither should be copied to an unrelated destination.
Expiry date and issue date are separate checks
A passport can remain unexpired but still fall outside an “issued within” condition. This is especially relevant where a passport was originally issued for more than ten years or where extra validity was added from a previous document. Check the date of issue as well as the date of expiry. If the authority measures the passport's age on the entry date, calculate from the original issue date printed in the travel document.
Also verify that the passport was valid when an eVisa, ETA, or other travel authorization was approved. Digital permissions are frequently linked to the exact passport number. Renewal usually creates a new number, and the old authorization may not automatically move to the new document. Follow the issuing authority's instructions to update, replace, transfer, or reapply for the permission.
Check the physical condition and identity page
Airlines and border authorities need to establish that the document is genuine, readable, and belongs to the traveler. Water damage, loose pages, a lifting laminate, tears, unauthorized marks, missing pages, or a damaged machine-readable zone can create a problem even when the expiry date is years away. A worn cover alone may not invalidate every passport, but uncertainty at check-in is a poor time to discover that the document cannot be scanned.
Review the biodata page carefully. The name, date of birth, sex marker where used, nationality, passport number, issue date, and expiry date should be legible and consistent with the booking and immigration application. If your name has changed, confirm what evidence is required and make sure the ticket follows the carrier's naming rules. Contact the passport authority promptly if a material detail is incorrect.
Some destinations or visa applications specify blank-page requirements. Count only pages that meet the authority's definition; observation or amendment pages may not qualify. Even where entry stamps are becoming digital, a visa sticker or border process can still require physical space. Check this before applying, not only at departure.
Check every country in the itinerary
Passport validity is a route-wide question. Review the destination, every country where you may pass border control, and the country from which you will depart. A connection that remains airside may be treated differently from a self-transfer that requires baggage collection and immigration. Weather, cancellation, or a missed flight can also turn an intended airside connection into an overnight landside stay, so a tight-validity passport leaves little room for disruption.
For a cruise, check every scheduled port, embarkation country, and possible diversion port. For overland travel, review each border separately. If the return itinerary changes countries, run the dates again. The Transit Visa Checker helps identify connection factors, while the main Visa Requirements Checker helps you separate passport rules from visa status.
Children, families, and dual nationals
Children normally need their own valid travel document, and their passports may have shorter validity periods than adult passports. Check expiry dates for every traveler rather than assuming the family renewed together. Some journeys also require consent letters, proof of relationship, or custody documents; these are separate from passport validity but can still affect travel.
Dual nationals should check which passport must be used to enter or leave each country. Some countries expect their citizens to travel on that country's passport. The passport used for the airline reservation should align with the document presented at check-in, while border procedures may require another national passport. Obtain official advice for the specific citizenship combination, and ensure any visa or electronic authorization is linked to the correct document.
Emergency passports and temporary travel documents can receive different treatment from full-validity ordinary passports. A destination that accepts an ordinary passport visa free may require a visa for an emergency document, or a transit country may not accept it at all. Select the correct document type when an official checker offers that option.
When renewing before travel is the safer choice
Renewal is sensible when the document does not clearly meet the rule, is damaged, lacks required pages, or will expire soon after the trip. It may also be prudent when travel dates are flexible and the remaining validity leaves no buffer for delays. However, renewal has consequences: the passport number changes, existing visas may remain in the old passport, and digital authorizations may need to be replaced.
Before submitting a renewal, list every visa, residence permit, authorization, flight, and identity record connected to the existing passport. Check whether the issuing country allows travel with both the old passport containing a valid visa and the new passport. Never assume this is accepted. Some authorities require a transfer or a fresh application, and an old passport that has been reported lost or stolen must not be used.
Allow enough processing and delivery time. Do not book around an advertised average if the passport authority warns that processing is not guaranteed. Make sure the new document arrives early enough to update the airline booking and any permission tied to the former passport.
A practical passport check before departure
Use the following sequence for a final international travel document review:
- Inspect the passport for damage and confirm every personal detail.
- Compare the expiry date with the destination's official reference date.
- Check any maximum passport-age or issue-date rule.
- Confirm blank pages and accepted passport type.
- Repeat the review for transit countries and other border crossings.
- Match visas, residence permits, ETAs, and eVisas to the passport number.
- Make sure the ticket name matches the accepted travel document.
- Recheck the current official rule shortly before departure.
Keep a secure copy of the identity page and record the passport authority's emergency contact procedure. A copy is not a substitute for the original passport, but it can make reporting loss easier. Avoid posting an unredacted passport scan in email or on unverified websites.
Common scenarios
Your passport expires shortly after your return
This can be acceptable for some destinations and unacceptable for others. The destination rule controls.
Your passport was renewed after a visa was issued
Some visas remain associated with an old passport or require both passports, while others need transfer or reissuance. Verify with the visa issuing authority.
You are transiting another country
The transit country can have document requirements of its own. Check the entire itinerary.
